Genocide suspect Leopold Munyakazi is set to appear before Nyarugunga Primary Court today for mention of his case.

Munyakazi faces multiple charges, including participating in the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, complicity in the Genocide, conspiracy to commit genocide, as well as extermination and murder as crimes against humanity.

The 65-year-old former lecturer at Kigali Institute of Education (now College of Education of the University of Rwanda) sneaked out of the country in 2004 to seek asylum in the US.

However, Munyakazi, who was arrested in Maryland State, was deported last month by US government.

Speaking to The New Times, yesterday, Faustin Nkusi, the spokesperson of the National Public Prosecution Authority, said prosecution was ready to begin trial after presenting its submissions to court last week.Prosecution will seek 30-day remand for the suspect, he said

It was not readily clear whether Munyakazi will be transferred to Muhanga District where many of his alleged crimes were committed as he allegedly committed similar crimes in Kigali.
