The Body of Christ, an organisation composed of seven inter-church umbrella groups working in Rwanda, has committed to empower the poorest and most vulnerable children, their families and communities to improve their well-being.

The organisation committed to uphold these responsibilities by signing a ‘covenant’ with World Vision Rwanda.

The ‘covenant’ was signed under the theme, ‘Together for a Rwanda, safe for our children’

Speaking to the media after signing, Bishop Alexis Birindabagabo the president of Protestant Council of Churches in Rwanda said through the cooperation, they will extend their activities not only towards children in their churches, but also those in the communities by ensuring their basic rights are fulfilled such as, feeding, healthcare and education among others.

"We work collectively with other child protection bodies to form a complete chain, there is a need to ensure a child grows up spiritually, physically and mentally upright so they can be able to serve their country,” he said.

George Getau, the national director of World Vision Rwanda said signing the ‘covenant’ with churches is very important because Body of Christ is a strategic institution that has presence in nearly all communities across the country.

"Being a child-focused organisation, World Vision found it fit to partner with the Body of Christ organisation because their core mandate is to take care of children. We are, therefore,  coming along as a partner,” he said.

Getau said children who do not live in families (orphans and street children) will benefit most from support that will be channeled through churches as they are very strategic institutions where many people find themselves.
