All set for Rutsindura memorial tournament

For the Rwanda volleyball fraternity, all roads will lead to Huye District this weekend for the Rutsindura Memorial tournament, which will be held at Petit Séminaire ‘Virgo Fidelis’ de Butare.

The two-day tournament that starts on Saturday and ends Sunday, is expected to attract local clubs for senior men, junior men and women. APR women volleyball club will be looking for revenge against Rwanda Revenue Authority, who beat them in the league and Carre d’As tournament final.

However, RRA coach Jean de Dieu Masumbuko said, "The players have been off, and we started preparations just recently but we should be ready for the tournament.”

The tourney will attract teams like KVC, IPRC-South, Kirehe VC, APR VC, Lycee de Nyanza, Rayon Sports VC and UBT in the senior men’s category while the women teams include; APR, RRA, Ruhango VC, Saint Aloys de Rwamagana, Saint Joseph Kabgayi and IPRC-Kigali.

The youth teams include; UR-CE, Rusumo High School, Petit Seminaire Virgo Fidelis De Butare, Groupe Scolaire Officiel De Butare (Indatwa N’inkesha), Ur-Huye, IPRC-East, Groupe Scolaire Saint Philippe Neri and College du Christ Roi Nyanza.

Former national volleyball coach Alphonse Rutsindura was born in 1958 in Ndora in Cyamukuza, Gisagara District; he studied at Petit Seminari of Butare and IPN (Institut Pédagogique National) in Butare.

He was killed during the 1994 Genocide against Tutsi alongside with his kids Alain Iliza, Arsene Izere, Aliba Icyeza and wife Vérène Mukarubayiza. Only his first born, Alaine Ikirezi survived the genocide that left over a million people dead.
