Basketball: REG coach says game one is a must-win

Rwanda Energy Group women basketball club head coach Esperance Mukaneza, has said that their first game against Young Sisters from Burundi at the Africa Zone Five Club Championship is a must-win for his side.

The match gets underway at 5pm at Benjamin Mkapa Indoor Stadium.

Mukaneza’s women start their group campaign against Young Sisters on Tuesday before taking on KPA from Kenya the following day.

"Our target is to win the first game and then build on that momentum for the next games,” she said, adding that his players were ready for the challenge.

REG have been drawn in Group C Alongside Young Sisters (Burundi) and KPA (Kenya).

"We need to be at our best in the first game which will give us an advantage in the next two games,” she added.

On Monday September 26, APR was defeated by Vijana Queens from Tanzania in game one on 64-40. While

APR will be back in action on Tuesday when they play against Wolkite from Ethiopia in Group B.

With the top team assured of a ticket to the FIBA Africa Champions Cup for Women, it will be a tight duel as it will be competitive.

For Tanzania, this will be the third successive club tournament they are hosting in the region in recent years.

Meanwhile, APR and Rwanda Energy Group (REG) will present Rwanda in this year's Africa Zone Five Club championship, after emerging champions of respective local leagues.
