LETTERS: Channeling development funds through NGOs is good move

RE: "Govt to channel pro-poor funds through civil society” (The New Times, September 16).

Great idea! This is a vote of trust in Non Governmental Organisations (NGOs) but it will need a greater plan to roll out. Indeed, engaging NGOs will ensure proper beneficiaries, needs identification and effective delivery of service as well as accountability.

I believe some NGOs have better capacities and understanding of local contexts. It will also give more time to government agents on the ground to regulate, follow up and demand for accountability. I also strongly believe that engaging civil society is one of the sure ways of achieving local economic development (LED), without forgetting private sector actors.

I am proud of the fact that as a country we are trying to do this. Kudos!
