Editor,

RE: "The growing concern of childhood cancers” (The New Times, September 5).

This is an excellent article on cancer awareness, an article focusing on the most vulnerable members of society, – our children – and our future.

If indeed knowledge is power, which I believe it is, we have here readily available information. Let’s use it to be aware and on the lookout for any signs and symptoms; let’s stay informed.

What is amazing is that studies tell us that when detected early, cancer is treatable; there are certain ways within our control that we can reduce cancer risks through lifestyle changes, diet/nutrition and including regular physical activity to our routines.

Taking charge of the children and your own health has been associated with timely diagnosis and treatment that result in increased rates of survival. We have months designated to awareness of various cancers and other diseases and September is for childhood cancers?

I prefer to make every day an awareness day, throughout the week, month and year, until all of us embrace the fact that early detection is the best protection because it saves life!
