He may have taken an indefinite break from local motorsport, but the former Rwanda National Rally champion Giancarlo Davite has bounced back as he eyes the 2016 Uganda Pearl of Africa Rally scheduled for September 16-17 in Busiika and Mubende.

The ‘Gianca rally team’ driver took a sabbatical after a one year suspension by the Rwanda Automobile Club (RAC) but he is raring to go after confirming his return to the cockpit.

He last raced in the 2015 Mountain Gorilla Rally where he dropped out due to mechanical issues.

The Pearl of Africa Rally is the sixth round of the Africa Rally Championship calendar. Davite will drive a Mitsubishi Evo X instead of the Subaru N12 ‘Omulette’ and will be navigated by Sylvia Vindevogel. The duo competed in the 2014 Pearl Rally.

"Yes, we’re going to race in Uganda (Pearl of Africa Rally), we’re no longer interested in Rwandan motorsport that is why we have registered under a Burundi license,” Vindevogel told Times Sport.

Meanwhile, according to the Uganda Rally Motorsport Federation, over 40 drivers have registered for Uganda’s prestigious event.

The main battle during the race will be between Zambia’s Muna Singh Jr, who clinched the 5th round of the FIA/ARC (last month’s Rwanda Mt. Gorilla Rally) to close the gap on the ARC leader Don Smith of Kenya. Muna is second with 50 points while Smith leads with 79.
