Rwandawomen national football team (She-Amavubi) lost their CECAFA women championship opening game against Tanzania at FUFA Technical center in Jinja, Uganda, on Monday.

The Kilimanjaro Queens registered a deserved victory to start their Group B campaign on a good note. Tanzania opened the score line in the 3rd minute through Asha Rashid.

Rwanda’s Anne Marie Ibangarye later made it 2 for Tanzania through an own goal. However, Rwanda fought back from 2 goals down to equalise though Fatuma Bashiri and Anton Anastazia. But Tanzania pressed harder and their efforts paid off in the 90th minute when Asha Rashid scored the winning goal.

Rwanda will play their second game against Ethiopia on Wednesday, while the last game will be between Ethiopia and Tanzania.

 The ‘Kilimanjaro Queens’ are favourites to win the title and have a better advantage having played in last year’s African Women Championship qualifiers.

The regional tournament started on Sunday with a double header in Group A where Burundi and Kenya opened with convincing results on match day one of the championship.

Burundi humiliated Zanzibar 10-1 in the first match of the day as Kenya overcame hosts Uganda 4-0. The islanders finished the game with 10 players after goalkeeper Amina Mohamed Kitambi was given marching orders. Action continues today as Burundi face Kenya while Zanzibar will meet Uganda.

The CECAFA Women Championship returns after a 30-year absence and all the matches will be played at the FUFA Technical Center in Njeru with two games running per day. The last CECAFA women football championship was held in Zanzibar and was won by the hosts in 1986.
