The national women sitting volleyball team suffered their second defeat against Iran at the on-going 2016 Rio Paralympic Games taking place at Riocentro Pavilion 6.

Rwanda were defeated by Iran in straight sets to record the second loss in a row at their debut as the first African women sitting volleyball team to compete at the fourth edition of the summer Games.

In the first game, Rwanda lost to defending champions and current world number one China on Saturday.

Peter Karreman’s team lost the first set 10-25 before losing the second one 19-25, while the third set also ended 18-25 in favour of the 2015 Para Volley Asia-Oceania silver medalist Iran, ranked 9th. Rwanda ranks number 13 in the world rankings.

Following the defeat, Rwanda’s hopes to qualify from the group stages are over and will now focus to finish in the best position possible in the playoffs.

Rwanda plays world number two USA on Wednesday in their final group B match that will take place at 3pm local time after which playoff games will follow.
