Muhadjir Hakizimana came from bench to score a late equalizing goal against Ghana in the last game of 2017 Africa Cup of Nations Gabon group H qualifier at the Accra Sports Stadium on Saturday.

The APR forward replaced AS Vital Club striker Ernest Sugira in the 65th minute and scored the goal in the 83rd minute with a superb free-kick to cancel out Samuel Tetteh’s opener for the Black Stars.

Avran Grant’s side Ghana finished the campaign unbeaten with 14 points (five and a draw against Mozambique), while Rwanda finished with seven points after winning two, drew one and lost three games. By press time, Mozambique were playing against Mauritius.

Ghana, who were missing several top players because they had already qualified for the finals tournament in Gabon, dominated the game but Amavubi held on to earn a precious point that will definitely be handy when the next FIFA ranking are released this month.

A draw away is a positive start for Amavubi interim head coach Jimmy Mulisa, who part of the team that lost 4-2 the last time Rwanda played in Ghana back in 2003 during the qualifier for AFCON 2004 in Tunisia.

Rwanda qualified for AFCON in 2004 after upsetting Ghana 1-0 at Amahoro National Stadium and Uganda by a similar score in Kampala.
