A total of 23 taekwondo teams from Rwanda and in the region have confirmed their participation in the 4th edition of the Taekwondo Ambassador’s Cup Championship due September 10-11 at Amahoro Indoor Stadium in Remera.

According to the Rwanda Taekwondo Federation (RTF) secretary general, Placide Bagabo, unlike the previous editions that attracted only local clubs, this year’s tournament will also attract foreign teams in both men and women categories.

"We have decided to expand the competition to include teams from around the region to make it more competitive, and help develop the sport in the region,” said Bagabo.

Rwanda ranks sixth in Africa and are in top 40 globally.

Nine teams from around the region – [Uganda (two), Kenya (five), Tanzania (one) and DR Congo (one)] – have already registered for the competition while hosts Rwanda will see 14 teams participate.

According to Bagabo, best performers from the Ambassador’s Cup and the national championship, slated for October, will have a chance to represent the country in international competitions, including WTF World Championships next year.
