It’s hard not to state that Wizkid’s performance in Kigali on Saturday was dogged by poor sound system.
However, the Nigerian heartthrob proved to be no stranger to such stages as he managed to pull off a great performance in front of thousands of excited fans at a fully-packed Rugende Training Centre on the outskirts of Kigali.
Indeed, it is safe to say that Starboy’s first performance in Rwanda was a success.
The singer, born Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, the headlining act of the night, stepped on to stage few minutes to midnight. Clad in a red jacket, black pants and t-shirt, he performed most of his hit songs, including Final, Caro, Show You the Money, On Top Your Matter, In My Bed, Love My Baby, and Ojuelegba, to name a few.
In particular, thousands went into a frenzy when he performed ‘Ojuelegba’. Wizkid couldn’t leave the stage without performing his latest hit, Shabba, featuring several American singers such as Chris Brown, French Montana and Trey Songz.
The 26-year old also performed his song with Drake which revellers requested the moment he stepped on the stage. The "Show You The Money” hit maker performed in Kigali after another show in Mwanza, Tanzania.
"Thank you so much Kigali, Rwanda for the love. I’m so excited and y’all make my life so nice,” he said to the revellers.
The show was graced by several artistes, including Uganda’s prominent rapper Navio, who [performed for just a few minutes; the Good Lyfe Crew of Radio and Weasel, who didn’t perform; and producer Washington, to name a few.
South African House duo Liquideep also performed at the Mutzig Beer Fest. They performed Magic Door, Feel It, Never Be the Same, Got It Goin’ In, Rise Again, and Alone, among others.
Chilean jazz expert Tito Al Ulibe also performed some jazz music. The Nupian Gypsies were the curtain-raisers for Wizkid.
"Wizkid has really put Kigali on fire. I might have lost my voice tonight but it’s worth it. I loved his performance, his energy... we need to see more and more international artistes who are as tolerant as Wizkid perform in Kigali,” said an excited fan.
But the venue could not accommodate all the music lovers who had turned up for the show as many were left fuming from outside.
The annual Mutzig Beer Festival seeks to bring artistes closer to their fans and help people to network.
