Gilbert ‘Yaoundé’ Kanyankore will only take charge of Rwanda’s remaining 2017 AfCON qualifier against Ghana on September 3 in Accra, after which a search for the permanent coach will commence, Times Sport has learnt.

The 62-year-old veteran tactician was appointed on Friday as interim head coach to replace Johnny McKinstry, who was sacked on Thursday after just over a year in charge.

Kanyankore will be assisted by AS Kigali head coach Eric Nshimiyimana and Jimmy Mulisa, who has been McKinstry’s right-hand man.

"They will be in charge for the Ghana game and after we shall begin planning for the new permanent head coach,” the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Sports and Culture, Lt Col Patrice Rugambwa told Times Sport on Sunday.

The trio is due to sign contracts today and immediately get down to the business of preparing the team later this week.

McKinstry was relieved of his duties on Thursday after a dismal run of results and Rwanda’s freefall in the FIFA/Coca-Cola rankings, dropping down to a lowly 121st in the latest ranking released earlier this month.
