National athletics championship set for today

Over 127 athletes are set to compete in this year’s national athletics championship scheduled for Sudnay (today), starting at 7:15am at Amahoro National Stadium in Remera.

The one-day annual track and field event has attracted a total of nine local athletics clubs that will be vying individual and team trophies both in men and women categories in 12 different disciplines.

The athletics disciplines include; 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1,500m, 3,000m 5,000m, and 10,000m as well as 100mx4 and 400mx4 relalys plus Triple and Long jump.

"We hope to have a very successful and competitive championship because of the good turn up and more especially because this championship will give our athletes a chance to qualify for next year’s IAAF World Athletics Championship in London,” Rwanda Athletics Federation (RAF) technical director, john Peter Ndacyayisenga told Sunday Sport.

London was chosen to host the 16th IAAF World Athletics Championship that will be held on August 5-13 at the Olympic Stadium.

The nine clubs that have confirmed to compete are; APR, New Athletics Stars, Mountain Classic, Vision Jeunesse Nouvelle, Burera athletics club, Sec Athletics, Kamonyi, Nyamasheke and Gasore Foundation athletics club.
