Police in Kirehe District have arrested a man suspected of trafficking narcotic drugs into the country.

Emmanuel Bakanireba was apprehended on Saturday in Kabuga Cell of Musaza Sector. He was at the time of his arrest found in possession of 25 kilogrames of cannabis, Police say.

Supt. James Rutaremara, the District Police Commander of Kirehe, said they were contacted by a resident in Kabuga, who informed the Police that he suspected one of the residents to be involved in unlawful business.

"At about 5am on Saturday, police officers were dispatched to go to his [Bakanireba] house and during the search, they recovered 25 kilogrammes of cannabis,” Supt. Rutaremara said.

The suspect is currently detained at Kirehe Police Station pending further investigations.

He thanked the resident who provided the lead, adding that information sharing will lead to arrest of more drug dealers and ultimately break the supply chain.

Although Kirehe is labeled one of the major transit routes for drug traffickers especially cannabis, the DPC noted that, through awareness, targeted operations, strengthening community policing, and routine checks and operations, main routes have been identified and many dealers arrested.

He appealed to the residents to keep the spirit of community policing and timely information sharing, in particular, alive, and be an eye for their neighbours.
