Urban Boys became the first group to win Primus GumaGuma Super Star music competition, piping nine others to the grand prize of Rwf24m on Saturday evening.

The trio of Safi ‘Madiba’ Niyibikora, James Manzi and Muhammad ‘NizzoKaboss’ Nshimiyimana beat RnB singer Christopher Muneza who came in second, while last year’s first runner-up Bruce Melodie emerged third.

Clad in black suits and white shirts, Urban Boys sank to their knees as the host Anita Pendo read out their name from an envelope delivered by an auditor from PriceWaterhouseCoopers.

The crowd at Amahoro National Stadium was ecstatic as the Bralirwa Managing Director Jonathan Hall delivered a dummy cheque of Rwf24m to the trio.

"We are delighted. We gave it our all and it has paid off,” said Manzi, known by the stage name Humble Jizzo.

Urban Boys won the competition after snubbing the previous edition. Kina Music star Christopher was content with the outcome. He walked away with Rwf7.5m.

"I am fine, not complaining, because I came here knowing that anything can happen. It is a competition,” said Christopher, who had returned to the competition, having missed out in 2015.

A dissatisfied Bruce Melodie said the results did not reflect justice and immediately took to social media to urge his fans to stay calm "because in such competitions, there will always be kata”.

"Kata” is a term used in the local showbiz industry to refer to "manipulation” or "scheming” to alter the results. Despite his clear discontent, Bruce Melodie walked away with Rwf7m.

There were murmurs of discontent in the crowd as the 10 contestants were announced in the order they finished, especially with singer Allioni finishing sixth, ahead of the likes of Jules Sentore, Danny Nanone and Gaby Umutare.

All the ten performed for the crowd before the results were announced. The top three were also awarded sets of music instruments to use in their music careers.

PGGSS is an annual music competition sponsored by Bralirwa’s premier brand Primus.
