Saturday Kigali Sharks vs Lion de Fer 9pm

After a long pause, the national rugby league resume on Saturday with the Kigali Sharks taking on Lion de Fer in the Kigali League at the Utexrwa ground.

Lion de Fer, who have 9 points, and are tied on points with reigning champions Remera Buffaloes, will be seeking to go past the Buffaloes and into the semi-finals, which are scheduled for September 9. 

Yannick Sangwa, the Lion de Fer assistant coach-cum-player, said the team is ready despite the absence of their key player, Marcel Cambara Koko.

Last weekend, Remera Buffaloes were supposed to take on Lion de Fer, but they didn’t turn up for the game. 

If the Rwanda Rugby Federation (RRF) awards forfeit points to the Lions, a win against Sharks this weekend could be enough for them to advance to the semis as Buffaloes have one more game in hand, against Sharks. 

The Sharks, who are bottom-placed in the four-team table, only have 3 points following four defeats in the regular season league, which means are are only playing for pride, having finished last year ahead of Lion de Fer. Thousand Hills lead the league with 19 points.

In the Southern Province League, Rusizi-based Resilience and Kamonyi Pumas will play in the semi-final play-offs. Resilience lead the table with 28 points while Pumas are second with 16 points. 

National University side UR-Grizzlies finished third with 4 points while Muhanga took the wooden spoon with three points.
