The Rwanda women football team has confirmed participation in this year’s inaugural CECAFA Women Football Championship set to be hosted in Kampala, Uganda from September 11-24.

The development was confirmed on Monday by Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) Acting Secretary General Patrick Kagabo.

The championship was established by the regional football governing body this year, in a bid to develop the sport among women.

Rwanda is among the few African countries with a national women league; however because of inactivity in international women football, Rwanda remains among the countries not ranked by FIFA in their rankings as of 2015.

From the CECAFA region, only Ethiopia, Kenya and Tanzania are ranked by FIFA.

Rwanda women national team will join other nations for the regional tournament. Countries which have confirmed participation include hosts Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Sudan, South Sudan and Ethiopia.

Eritrea, Zanzibar, Somalia, Djibouti and Zanzibar, the other CECAFA members, are yet to confirm their participation. Meanwhile, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Malawi have requested for guest spots, but are yet to be given a nod.
