Nature and the environment today seem to have gone haywire and connived against humanity. The Arctic ice is melting, a lake disappeared in Chile, and Asia is practically living under water.

Then in Africa, Rwanda,Ghana, Sudan and Uganda have experienced unprecedented rains, probably the worst in living memory.

So, while we were still watching those disasters, Bigogwe sector in Western Province was hit with unexpected rains that have left the area flooded, leaving houses submerged and people dead.

The people of Bigogwe are now grappling with the problem of floods. This is an international weather phenomenon that calls for broader ways of tackling it.

However, a country like Rwanda can address its concerns so far. People need to be sensitised about the hazard to mitigate its impact.

If need be, alarm systems can be installed to warn people when the rains start to pour so that they can move to safer zones.

People residing around hills have to be told about the worse danger they face because floods can be followed by landslides which would make the situation worse.

In the meantime, the victims of the floods in Bigogwe are dire need of life’s essentials before another disaster hits. There is an impeding outbreak of disease given the flooded waters that are now breeding bacteria.

We should not wait for another disaster to occur, let us make hay while it shines to avert a possible plight that would strain emergency efforts trying to ameliorate the condition of victims.
