University of Kibungo volleyball club head coach Dominique Ntawangundi has praised his team after winning a second consecutive league title in-front of their home fans in Ngoma District.

The defending champions won two and lost one of their playoffs third round matches on Sunday—they beat IPRC-South in straight sets (3-0) and Kirehe 3-2 before losing against their closest challengers, APR 3-1.

The Ngoma-based team was too strong for their closest title challengers, Kirehe and APR, who came into the weekend round of matches, hoping to delay UNIK’s charge to a second league title, at least until the final round next weekend in Kirehe.

"The foundation has been well set, we need to keep the spirit and affirm our slogan ‘Best Team!!!’ it is a great feeling to win two straight league titles,” Ntawangundi said after Sunday’s round of matches.

The team captain, Olivier Ntagengwa, who played a key role in the team’s triumph, said, "This is a great achievement for the club after winning two titles in two consecutive seasons, we knew it will be hard at the start of the season, but we showed good character.”

With one round remaining, UNIK lead the table with 59 points, ahead of the former champions APR which finished in second position on 47 points while Kirehe is in third place with 46 points and IPRC-South is fourth with 28 points.

Since their formation in 2009, UNIK, formerly INATEK, have won two league titles, two Genocide Memorial tournaments and KAVC memorial tournament twice. They will be looking to win a first Carre d’As title next month.
