Rehema Namutebi Karegeya put on an excellent show to win the inaugural Liberation Day golf tournament played on Sunday at the Kigali Golf Club course in Nyarutarama.

The one-day event, which was organized by the Kigali Golf Club and sponsored by Serena Kigali Hotel, attracted over 60 golfers as Rwandans marked 22 years of Liberation.

Namutebi carded the best overall score of 60 Net, to stun a strong field that included a large number of seasoned golfers, both males and females.

"I feel great to win the tournament, it’s a great victory, having been out of the game for the past three years, so it’s a good way to announce my return to competing,” said Namutebi.

In the senior’s category, John Lee scored 67 Net to emerge the winner while Jarmo finished second with 68. Rawal Malavika won the ladies’ fray with 70 Net and was followed by Alice Rwigema with 74.

Joseph Semwaga scored 69 Net to win the handicap 0-9; Song Hochan scored 67 Net to lead the handicap 10-18 category while Dr. Roger Bayingana dominated the handicap 19-28 with a Net score of 62.

The winners in each category were rewarded a shield and spear as a symbol for liberation plus holiday packages to Serena Kigali and Serena Kivu Sun hotel. The tournament will be held every year.
