The 2016 CECAFA Kagame Cup organizing committee has now turned to Rwanda to host the event after the Tanzania Football Federation declined to host the event.

The Council of East and Central African Football Association (CECAFA) media manager, Rogers Mulindwa said that either Rwanda or Sudan could now host the tournament that brings together the regions finest clubs.

"We have approached Rwanda and Sudan, and a final communication will be released soon,” the Ugandan official noted.

However, Felicité Rwemarika, the acting secretary general for Rwandan football governing body, FERWAFA, has denied knowledge of any official communication from CECAFA in regards to hosting the annual competition, which is sponsored by President Paul Kagame since 2002.

The 41st edition of the regional tournament was initially scheduled to start on June 18 and run through July 2in Dar es Salaam, but Tanzania pulled out citing a busy international schedule for their clubs in CAF competitions.

Last month, CECAFA Secretary General, Nicolas Musonyi had promised to announce the new host. Kenya was the other nation to be approached early this month.

Tanzania has hosted the tournament a record 12 times, with the latest being three times in the last five years including 2011, 2012 and 2015 while Rwanda and Sudan have hosted the event 4 and 5 times respectively.

Last year, Tanzanian side Azam FC beat Gor Mahia of Kenya to win the title in Dar es Salaam.
