The current floods that are affecting the people in the western and eastern provinces of the country, particularly in Rubavu District, are mainly due to inadequate terracing leading to massive water flow because there is no barrier to lessen the speed of the running water.

Agricultural assistants are needed now country wide to teach people, particularly those from the hilly terrains about terracing. Precautionary measures are needed to counter such natural calamities.

Disaster preparedness awareness programmes should be given priority in order to reduce on the impact of floods.

Reducing erosion and its devastating effect would be another way of killing two birds with one stone, because the harvest will have been increased and protecting the population from such natural disasters would have been catered for.

Establishing a commission charged with over seeing the implementation of such projects would be vital in order to boost both people’s welfare and the agricultural input.
