Karongi Tea Golf tournament launched

Kigali Golf Club in partnership with Karongi Tea Factory limited on Wednesday launched a golf tournament dubbed ‘Karongi Tea Golf Tournament’ in a bid to further develop the sport in the country.

Kigali Golf Club in partnership with Karongi Tea Factory limited on Wednesday launched a golf tournament dubbed ‘Karongi Tea Golf Tournament’ in a bid to further develop the sport in the country. 

The tournament was launched at the Kigali Golf Club in Nyarutarama by the Club captain Dr. Davis Kashaka Karegeya along with Jean Baptiste Mutangana, the Chairman of Karongi Tea Factory Limited.

The inaugural edition is scheduled to tee off today at the at the new 9-hole Kigali Golf Club course.

"We are very happy to launch this tournament, we needed to engage people in playing golf because the game remains one of the unfamiliar sport in the country, and this is one way to entice the young generation,” said Kashaka.

The one-day event is open only to the amateur golfers, both men and women while the seniors’ category will only feature men and it will be played on stroke-play format.

The men amateurs’ category is divided into three age groups, namely; 5-9, 10-18 and 19-28. The ladies category will feature those from 5-35 years of age while the seniors’ category is open to anyone above 55 years of age. In his remarks, Mutangana, who is also a member of the Rwanda Golf Union disclosed that; "We decided to sponsor this tournament because it’s is the best sport that brings together the young and the old not forgetting it’s a game that we also play.”

The tournament will be the third on this year’s calendar after the Kigali Grand tournament which took place mid-May and Madaraka Day tournament that took place last weekend.
