The fourth edition of the Handball Genocide Memorial tournament kicks off today with several games scheduled to take place at various venues around Kigali.

This year’s edition has attracted 15 teams from Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda with 10 teams under the men’s category while the remaining five will be competing in the women’s fray.

Uganda will have four teams in the tournament; Police in both categories, and Ever Green and Makerere in the men’s category.  

Tanzania is being represented by last year’s finalists Ngome in the men’s category, while Rwanda has six teams in the men’s category and four in the women’s category.

According to the organisers, Rwanda Handball Federation (FERWAHAND), games will be played in a round robin format in the three groups and each group will provide the top team that will qualify for the semi-finals that will be played on Sunday before the finals later that day.

Defending Champions APR, in Group A alongside local rivals Nyakabanda and Uganda’s Police, will kick off their campaign against Nyakabanda this morning before locking horns with Police seeking for a semi-final slot.

Ngome, who will be seeking to change their fortunes after losing the title last year to APR, are in group B with Ecole Secondaire Kigoma, Ever green, and Rwanda Defence Force (RDF), while local side Police are in Group C along with Uganda’s Makerere and University of Rwanda (UR); College of Education.

Group A games will be taking place at Gikondo ground, Group B games at UR’s College of Education court, while Group C games will be hosted at Court B.

Last year, APR beat Ngome 26-22 to win the men’s title, while APPEGA Gahengeri won the women’s title after defeating University of Rwanda’s College of Education 15-2 in the title decider. The women tournament will begin and end tomorrow.
