Police in Rulindo District are holding the executive secretary of Ngoma Sector over alleged misuse of public funds.

Ferdinand Musabyimana is detained at Bushengo police Station, according to Police.

Inspector of Police Innocent Gasasira, the Northern Province Police spokesperson, said the accused misused the funds from the social protection programme, Ubudehe.

Ubudehe is a national programme dedicated to support the poor through offering direct support.

The suspect previously served as the leader of Rukozo Sector until recently when he was transferred to Ngoma in the same district.

"Musabyimana was arrested on Monday. He is accused of embezzling funds meant to support the poor in Rukozo Sector, where he was a leader before; preliminary investigations show he used the funds for his personal benefit,” said Gasasira

He said that investigations are ongoing to find out how much was embezzled. So far, he is suspected to have misused over Rwf15 million.

According to article 325 of the Penal Code, misuse of public funds attracts between seven to 10 years and fines ranging between twice and five times the misused amount.
