Senegal sting Amavubi in friendly tie

The National football team, Amavubi yesterday suffered a setback in their preparation for the 2017 Africa Nations’ Cup qualifiers after losing 2-0 to the Teranga Lions of Senegal in a friendly match at Amahoro Stadium.

The National football team, Amavubi yesterday suffered a setback in their preparation for the 2017 Africa Nations’ Cup qualifiers after losing 2-0 to the Teranga Lions of Senegal in a friendly match at Amahoro Stadium.

Diouf Mame Biram, who plays for Premier league side, Stoke City put the visitors ahead in the 14th minute after a pass from Southampton midfielder Sadio Mane.

Amavubi struggled against the superior West African side and on the 30th minute Guinghamp midfielder Sankhare Younousse, scored the second goal after a cross Crystal Palace full back Sourre Pape Ndouge.

Coach Johnny Mckinstry ringed the changes in the second half but the Senegalese still dominated proceedings and missed several chances in the second half.

The match was part of preparations for the forthcoming 2017 Africa Nations’ Cup qualifier against Mozambique scheduled for June 4.

It was the first time both sides meet in any CAF or FIFA competition.

Amavubi are currently second in Group H with six points, halfway through their target as they strive to qualify for the AFCON finals tournament for the second time in history, while Mozambique are bottom of the table with just a point.

Senegal is on right track to qualify as they sit comfortably at the summit of Group K with 12 points, six more than closest contenders, Burundi.
