I'm buying a 'moto'

If you have a cool motorbike that you don’t use or just want to give away, let your girl know. Or if you know a place where I can get a good deal, let me know as well. I’m ready to buy one. Saving for a car is taking longer than I expected and I don’t want to get into the loan trap with those unjustified interest rates so a bike is just what I need and can afford at this point.

We have pretty good roads, potholes and traffic jams are a rarity compared to many other countries and while no one is safe from road accidents, the numbers aren’t as high as elsewhere so I feel good about this. The reason I want my own bike is because of some not so great experiences I’ve had recently.

Twice this week, I nearly lost it with two different motor riders. One couldn’t’ stop talking on the phone even after I asked him to stop at least twice because I wanted him to deal with his business first instead of putting us both at risk.

The man just continued riding with one hand like he hadn’t even heard me. So there we were whizzing in and out of lanes with him yelling at the person on the other end of the line "not to let the chicken out”.

I can only imagine what other pedestrians thought of us but that wasn’t even the biggest of my worries. I was afraid that the phone would slip out of his hand and between trying to grab it and balance the bike, we would probably crash.

I don’t know if it’s just me but when I’m on phone, I get distracted so I can’t for instance write something down unless it’s related to the conversation, say a contact name or phone number. I assumed the motor rider was only focused on his chicken and not the cars speeding past and I knew I was right when he hit a clear road bump hard.

The second experience was even more trying. A police van happened to ride past just as I was settling onto the moto and the rider seemed shaken. I suspected he didn’t have a license or had something to hide and anxious people tend to do all kinds of things in their attempt to get away.

There and then, it hit me that when you hail a moto, you really don’t anything about the rider or the state of his bike. He could be high, drunk or just learning to ride. Owning my own bike would eliminate several of these uncertainties.

I will still have to deal with other challenges regular motorists face including failed brakes, other crazy drivers and pedestrians but at least then, I will have some control over my riding experience.

I have seen a couple of women on small scooters so I know I won’t be the only one out there. So, please send those recommendations of places I can find a quality and reasonably priced motorbike.
