Kenyans continued their dominance of the Kigali Peace Marathon after sweeping top positions in the 12th edition in both the men and women’s 42km event, yesterday.

Kenyans continued their dominance of the Kigali Peace Marathon after sweeping top positions in the 12th edition in both the men and women’s 42km event, yesterday.

 

The men’s category winner, James Cheritich Tallam, took an early lead and looked comfortable throughout the race that was flagged off by Sports and Culture Ministry, Permanent Secretary, Lt. Colonel Patrice Rugambwa.

The Kenyan clocked two hours, 19 minutes and 3 seconds and went home with Rwf2m ahead of compatriots Rono Kibet who clocked 02:19:20 to win Rwf1.6m while William Rutto Chebdi finished in third place (2:20:11) to get a cash prize of Rwf1.4m.

Theoneste Kayiranga (02:24:06) was Rwanda’s best placed athlete in the 7th position. Thomas Dushimumukiza came in 12th place (02:30:42) followed by last year’s second place winner, Jean Baptiste Ruvubi in the 13th position (02:31:4).

 

In the ladies category, it was also a Kenyan affair with the winner, E. Jeruiyot Chemweno, clocking two hours, 38 minutes and 20 seconds to walk home with Rwf2m, ahead of Alice Cheroti Milgo Serser (02:41:32) who got Rwf1.6m while Jacqueline Nyetipei Kipromoo (02:53:56) got the third position prize of Rwf1.4m. 

Kenyan runners were in good form as they also took charge in the 21km race, sweeping the first three positions in the men’s category while Rwandan Felicien Muhitira came in 5th position. 

 

In the ladies category, Kenyan Anges Jeruto won the 21km half marathon after clocking one hour, 13 minutes and 31 seconds to pocket Rwf1m. 

Rwandan Salome Nyirarukundo came in second position (1:13:55) to bag Rwf 700,000.

 

"I am happy for finishing second and I owe this to good preparations. I trained for this event for the last two months and it’s a great feat for me,” said Salome Nyirarukundo who came in third position during last year’s edition. Over 2000 people took part in the peace marathon.

With sponsorship from Turbo King, Mackintosh raised funds to donate to Grace Rwanda, a charity set up by two genocide survivors, who are building libraries and stocking them with books and text books in schools and youth centres across Rwanda
