National women league side Kamonyi FC were dealt a fatal blow in their league title hunt following a disappointing 1-1 draw away to Gakenke at the weekend.

The Southern Province-based outfit had vowed to grab the three points to keep pace with the seven-time title winners and defending champions AS Kigali but their hopes were put in doubt.

Hosts Gakenke took the lead in the first half before Kamonyi grabbed an equalizer in the 78th minute through striker Callixte Iradukunda.

"It was a disappointing result for us, we played a good game but probably luck was not on our side, however; I think the league is still open, although the title hopes are diminishing,” said Kamonyi head coach Emmanuel Habiyambere.

The result left Kamonyi in third place with 11 points, level with second-placed Bugesera, who have a game in hand—both teams are seven points behind leaders AS Kigali after they were awarded a forfeit win over Inyemera FC.
