Over two hundred participants took part in the inaugural ‘CIMERUN’ competition that was held at the weekend in Bugarama, Rusizi district, Southern Province.

The event organised and sponsored by CIMERWA cement manufacturers covered a total distance of 10km for the senior category and 5km Run for Fun, under the Road Safety Awareness Campaign’ aimed at sensitising and creating awareness about road safety.

Marie Vianney Myasiro crossed the finish line first in the 10km race, and was followed by Felix Niyonsaba in the second. Salome Nyirarukundo emerged the best female runner in the 10km race.

In the 5km race, Olivier Shyaka conquered the rest to win this category; Obaridi Ufitimana was second, while Celine Iranzi was the best female runner.

Myasiro who was thrilled said, "I’m excited and happy to have won this race because this puts me in a better position as I look forward to take part in this year’s Peace Marathon which is due this month.”

Surprisingly, one participant, Diane Ndagukunda, who gave birth two months ago, took part in the 5km race, and afterwards told Time Sport the reason why she took part.

"It is my first time to engage in such a competition. I did not train before but, it was joy to race with the others,” Ndagukunda said as she breastfed her two-month baby.

CIMERWA Chief Executive Officer, Maria Legodi Busisiwe, said, "We strive to operate in a manner that gives back to the community that we call home. We thank all athletes and residents who took part in this competition.”

The winners, Myasiro and Nyirarukundo walked away with engraved Plaques and Rwf250, 000 cash prize while Shyaka and Iranzi pocketed Rwf100,000 each as the best in the 5km race.

As an encouragement for the resident to engage in sports, Rusizi District authority offered the winners of the different categories, an extra Rwf100, 000 each.
