Employees of Banque Populaire du Rwanda (BPR), on Friday, commemorated the 1994 Genocide against Tutsi, starting the event with a ‘Walk to Remember’ from their headquarters in the central business district to Kigali Genocide Memorial Centre in Gisozi.

BPR employees toured different parts of the memorial centre and then attended a lecture on the Genocide.

According to Judith Muhongerwa, the chief human resources officer at the bank, the visit was organised to join the country in remembering the Genocide against Tutsi and fighting genocide ideology.

"This visit is very important for us as it helps us to look back and reflect on what happened and honour those that survived so that we can always be by their side not only during this period,” she said.

Donizio Murangwa, one of the BPR staffers who participated in the walk, said it is not the first time he had visited the memorial centre, but the more he visits, the more he renews his commitment to fight genocide ideology.

"As a youth, I have a role to play in making sure the genocide never happens again in our country,” he said.

Beside the annual visits to memorial sites, BPR conducts other activities that include supporting Genocide survivors. For instance, 22 students, mostly children of victims who were employees of the bank, have been supported from primary school to higher education.

BPR will also help in renovating two houses for elderly Genocide survivors in Huye District.
