Rwanda Revenue Authority coach Jean Luc Ndagikengurukiye has saluted his players after reaching the semi-finals of the 2016 Women’s African Club Championships following victory against Shams of Egypt in the quarter-final.

Unfortunately, the Rwanda league champions lost to defending champions Ahly of Egypt 3-0 (25-10, 25-15 and 25-9), who set up a final clash against Carthage of Tunisia.

The Tunisians defeated record seven-time champions, Kenya Pipeline 3-1 (21-25, 31-29, 25-23, and 25-15) in the other semi-final on Friday. The final was due to be played last evening in the Egyptian capital, Cairo.

"I am happy with the way the players have shown the fight until the end of the game. We wanted to reach the final, but have not been able, and in any case, there is no shame losing to a great side like Al Ahly, who are also the defending champions,” Ndayikengurukiye said.

In the play off 5 to 8 positions, Shams rebounded from their quarter-final loss to beat the 2014 champions GSP of Algeria 3-1 (14-25, 25-20, 25-17 and 25-21) whole Sfax of Tunisia overwhelm Kenya Prisons 3-1 (25-17, 21-25, 27-25, 25-20).

On Thursday, RRA made the biggest surprise in the competition’s history by becoming the first Rwandan team to reach the last four in the women category. National University of Rwanda is the only team to reach to the semi finals in men’s category in 2005 and 2011.

Meanwhile, the national women league resumes on Sunday with APR VC facing IPRC-Kigali while Ruhango High School will be up against Groupe Scolaire St Joseph.

In men category, APR will play against UBT at Amahoro Indoor Stadium while Kigali Volleyball Club host Lycee de Nyanza at Rafiki in Nyamirambo.
