Rwanda Underwater Hockey Club beat Gruppo Sub Ospedale of Tanzania 4-2 in an international friendly played at Cercle Sportif de Kigali in Rugunga over the weekend.

Dressed in a flurry of fins, sticks and snorkel helmets, the hosts made light work of Ospedale, when they pushed the puck along the bottom of the pool to net three goals before the half break.

As the game continued, and more fans poured in, the hosts made it 4-0. The visitors made a comeback scoring two consolation goals, but time was against them as the referee blew the final whistle.

"It was an interesting game, we won but the main objective was to attract as many fans as possible and I think that, we achieved,” said Nicole Muhinzi, the captain of the Rwandan side.

Tom Bishop, the captain of the visiting side said, "We scored two goals but unfortunately we conceded more goals than we scored. Nonetheless, we are happy with the performance of our team and we look forward to the return leg in Dar es Salaam.”

When asked why they lost, the captain replied, "Technically, the game depends on the pools, the pool here has a big slop, and shallow end. It’s a bit of a challenge if you depend on it.

RUWHC is planning a visit Tanzania between May and June as both sides look forward to develop underwater hockey in the region.
