On Sunday at around 7:00 am, Olivier Mbyariyehe who had been detained at Kiyumba Police Station in Muhanga District was shot dead after he tried to escape from custody, according to police.

Mbyariyehe had been detained at the police station since 14 April, 2016 for assaulting and seriously injuring a DASSO personnel, Jeremie Hategekimana, who was on duty and currently admitted at Kabgayi Hospital.

DASSO stands for District Administration Security Service Organ.

"On the day of his arrest, Mbyariyehe was found cutting trees from a government forest in Rongi Sector to burn charcoal; when the village chief, who was in company of two DASSO officers tried to stop him, he reacted violently, seriously hacking one of the DASSO personnel with a panga,” said Assistant Commissioner of Police Celestin Twahirwa, the Rwanda National Police spokesperson.

Mbyariyehe had also been accused by neighbours of abusing drugs and being a menace in the community.

This morning, Mbyariyehe was uncuffed to facilitate him to go and ease himself, instead he run away, the police officer on guard shot in air to warn him but he persisted and subsequently was shot dead, according to police.
