In December 2015, the then Kigali Institute of Management (KIM) became KIM University and has since embarked on a robust rebranding drive. KIM University’s rebranding seeks to draw new leverages from the education industry in Rwanda, the greater African region, and worldwide.

The acronym KIM encapsulates our strategic intent. As a University we strive to provide knowledge ("K”) suffused with the skill sets and requisite competencies that the market requires. Our programs are market responsive and inspire ("I”) creativity and a sense of self-worth in  our students, and motivate ("M”) them to attain their dreams in life.

Our rebranding into University is inspired by deliberate efforts to achieve industry relevance; provide competency driven education; enrich student experience; foster creative collaboration and strategic partnerships with local, regional and international educational institutions, civic society and the private sector.

KIM University boasts state-of- the art facilities including a picturesque new air-conditioned multistoried building with spacious modern classrooms, lecture theatres, halls, and library and computer labs. To improve our learning environment, the University has created an efficient e-learning platform for lectures delivery, course assessment and research.

The transformational context

KIM University’s focus is on developing business leaders with the ability to create wealth and also employment to the young Rwandan population. Strategic initiatives have been designed in such a way that students and professionals (leaders and managers) are adequately prepared to respond in a pragmatic manner. They are trained to lead organizational change and transformation in the time of turbulence and uncertainty. It is KIM University’s firm belief that the best way to survive change is to initiate it. And it is with this belief that KIM University has been engaging in a relentless endeavour towards continuous improvement.

To drive these transformational efforts KIM University has hired a new Vice Chancellor, Prof. Peter John Opio from the University of Notre Dame in the United States of America.  Prof. Opio has a wide-range of skills and competencies in the education and the public sectors, spanning the continents of Africa, the UK and the United States. He has undertaken several consultancies with local and bilateral institutions.

Prior to joining KIM University, he was Professor of Strategy at the University of Notre Dame and the Academic Director of the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders (YALI).

The University’s new structure, with the new post of Deputy Vice Chancellor Innovation, Research and Development, re-enforces KIM’s strategic orientation towards maintaining an effective partnership between industry, the society and the public sector.

KIM University has entered into strategic partnerships with regional as well as international Universities including Uganda Technology and Management University (UTAMU) and the Catholic University of Milan. Following a competitive process, KIM University was chosen to host the MBA Global Business and Sustainability from January 2017.
