It was glamour and glitz at the fifth edition of Rwanda Movie Awards which took place at Serena Hotel Kigali on Saturday as outstanding actors, actresses, directors, producers and other people in the film industry were recognized for their work.

The annual awarding ceremony, organised by Ishusho Arts, was put in place to support and promote the growth of the local film industry.

The director of Ishusho Arts’; Jackson Mucyo told those in attendance that as part of their growth, the Rwanda Movie Awards event had been pushed to grow beyond borders.

"One of the reasons why we thought of making Rwanda Movie Awards an international event is because we realised that for the years we have spent awarding, the awards keep rotating between the same people. It so far makes more sense to attract other regional people to participate,” he said.

Mucyo added that it’s difficult to identify the growth and development of the industry without involving the outside industry players.

"We can’t easily get to see the growth of our local actors and actresses unless they compete with on the international market,” he noted.

He however urges film industry players to look at quality and professionalism as the key for to favorable competition adding that fans, private sector, government and many others should also join hands to support their local industry.

"When you look at the regional films, there’s nothing unusual compared to how ours are produced but the only fact that lets the industry down is the inability of our people to buy locally produced products,” he said.
