MUHANGA — Security agents in Muhanga have arrested another man in connection with the killing of Local Defence personnel (LDU) in Muhanga district.

Innocent Bayingana, who was arrested in Ngororero district on Thursday, is alleged to have shot dead Alex Ndayisaba in Ruvumera village on Wednesday.

The deceased was shot in the lower abdomen at a close range target and died instantly, as he and others tried to foil a planned robbery during a night patrol.

His body was buried the next day and most police officers have referred to him as an authentic patriot.

"The LDU killer was ambushed while hiding in his family in Ngororero district on October 30- after a tip off by his colleague Jean Pierre Nizeyimana who had been arrested on the night of the murder,” Berte Rutsindura, the District Police Commander said.

He added that the two armed robbers are deserters and possessed army gear including a Sub Machine Gun and army uniforms with which they have been using to terrorise residents in Nyamabuye Sector of recent.

Security agents also recovered a stolen generator.

The suspects, both residents of Ngororero, said that the Muhanga attack was part of a wide plan to hit Gitarama and Butare towns -targeting traders especially on market days.

"We obtained the guns so as to rob and get rich quickly, we have been in this business for days, targeting traders, and any rich person we come across,” Bayingana said.

They however, denied being responsible for previous crimes in the area or collaborating with some residents during their attacks.

Before this latest incident, unknown thugs recently attacked Chinese constructors, and robbed a resident of Frw2m.

Abedi Ruzigana, the vice Mayor, said, "The arrest of the thugs was a result of cooperation between residents of Nyamabuye and Ngororero and security officers who are committed to maintaining the security status of residents.”

He disclosed that the district conveyed condolences to the family of the deceased local defence personnel.

Measures to curb down armed robbery are in place and so far five people including a woman, on the top of the criminal gang are also currently being held at Muhanga Police station, according to the Police commander.

District and security officials have appealed to residents to identify suspicious people and report all kinds of criminal activities in the area to prevent crimes.
