Irish potato and fresh peas lovers will have to dig deeper into the pockets following price increases of the two food items over the past week. 

A mini-market survey conducted by Business Times across markets in Kigali city and its suburbs indicates that the price of Irish potatoes is now at Rwf350 in Kimironko and Nyarugenge markets, an increase of Rwf70 from Rwf280 last week.

That of fresh peas went up by Rwf100 over the past week to Rwf1,400 a kilogramme in Nyabugogo Market, from Rwf1,200. Bananas cost Rwf240 per kilogramme, an increase of Rwf20 compared to the previous week.

However, most commodity prices were stable during the past week, with fresh beans ranging from Rwf400 to Rwf500, while a 25-kg bag of maize flour goes for Rwf13,000 in most city markets and grocery shops.

Cassava flour costs between Rwf350 to Rwf540 while a medium sized tin of carrots costs between Rwf500 to Rwf700 per kilo and cabbages Rwf500, pumpkins are at between Rwf400 and Rwf500.

A kilogramme of sweet potatoes costs Rwf300 in Kicukiro market and Rwf350 in Nyamirambo.

Milk ranges from Rwf400 to Rwf500 per litre in and around Kigali City, while beef costs 2,700 per kilogramme in Zinia and Batsinda markets. Passion fruits are at between Rwf1,400 and Rwf1,600 per kilo in most city markets, and pineapples cost between Rwf500 and Rwf700, depending on size and location. A kilograme of mangoes is at Rwf1,700.
