Poultry farming in Eastern Province could be boosted thanks to a new multi-million poultry facility in Bugesera District.

The facility, managed by the Abusol Business Ltd, is expected to start operations this month and has been designed to accommodate more than 25000 chicks per season.

The first phase of this agribusiness project is estimated at almost Rwf1 billion and will sit on more than 14-hectares of land.

The centre is expected to introduce modern technology in poultry and producing quality animal feeds, Jean Baptiste Musabyimana, the Managing Director and owner of Abusol Ltd, said.

The poultry centre comprises of modern chicken houses with capacity to accommodate around 25,000 chicken, an animal feed factory and administrative offices, he added.

"Our intention is to bring high quality eggs to the market, and also assist farmers to add value to poultry farming,” Musabyimana, noted.

Boosting local consumption and exports

According to Robert Muhizi, a poultry farmer in Bugesera, the centre is a great milestone towards increasing local production of eggs.

"It is also a game changer in terms of exporting eggs to other regional markets,” Muhizi said.

Last year, the Food and Agriculture Organisation launched a project to promote youth employment and fight malnutrition in four districts across the country.
