The 2016 men’s national handball league kicks off this weekend with three fixtures set for today and two to be played on Sunday at different venues around the country.

This year’s league will have the same number of teams (10) despite a new entrant, Kibogora Polytechnic from Nyamasheke district. Kibogora is replacing the 2013 champions Gicumbi which withdrew from the league due to financial problems.

Earlier, Rwanda handball federation had announced that this year’s league would expand to 12 teams, expecting new teams like Kibogora and University of Rwanda-Nyarugenge Campus, however, the latter opted not to register, according to the federation secretary general, Jean Paul Ngarambe.

Two-time reigning champions Police handball club, who won five trophies last season, and still fresh from winning this year’s Heroes day tourney last month, begin their title defense against Groupe Scholaire Rambura.
