The switch from Kenya to Tunisia as hosts for this year’s African Women Volleyball Club Championship will not in any way disrupt preparations for Rwanda Revenue Authority women’s Volleyball Club.
The continental championship games are slated for next month (April).
In an interview, head coach Jean Luc Ndayikengurukiye said "We have no problem even if the venue for the club champions’ games has been changed to Tunisia.”
"The Ministry of Sports and Culture will pay for the club’s air tickets, and preparations are underway but first we have to concentrate on the national volleyball league which is also a good opportunity for us to prepare for the games,” said Ndayikengurukiye, who is also a former captain of the men’s national skipper.
RRA will represent Rwanda in this year’s edition of the women’s club champions having won the 2015 national women title.
The changes were made by Continental African Volleyball Association (CAVB) in an official communiqué, following doubts of Kenya to host the tournament.
CAVB said the Africa Nazarene University Gymnasium in Kenya was not up to standard to host the continental undertaking.
According to FIVB requirements, a tournament of more than 12 teams can only be held from at least two venues.
Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) president Waithaka Kioni recently re-affirmed through an email to CAVB that they were not in good financial shape to host the event.
"We were supposed to host the 2016 African Women Club Championship in April but it might be impossible and we are uncertain if we shall be able to do it,” said Wauthaka, who is also the current vice president of CAVB.
Egypt hosted last year’s games while Kenya last hosted the games in 2012, and the Kenya Pipelines are the record holders of the continental title having won the title seven times.
RRA reached the quarter finals last year, and were ranked sixth over role. The women’s African Club Championship was won by Egyptian women’s Al Ahly SC when they beat Kenya Pipelines by 3 sets to nil.
