The mother, a cultivator, however, said she was worried since she does not have enough means to cater for the baby.
"When I saw my baby, I was awestruck,” she said. "She has two fully developed heads. She feeds with both mouths and breathes with two noses. I thank God that the baby and I are okay,” she said.
"I am too poor to meet accrued medical bills…I beg government and good samaritans to help me,” she added.
After news spread of a "miracle newborn”, hundreds of people flocked to the hospital, to get a glimpse of the child.
"All people in the hospital gathered around the maternity ward. There were hundreds of people with some of them coming from nearby villages. However, only a few saw the baby as medics kept us away,” said Damascene Kubwimana, a resident.
"It’s good that the baby has been shifted to Kigali. Otherwise, it would have been difficult for the doctors to control the crowd. It is the first time we have had of such a case in our district.”
Medics who saw the baby believe the birth could be a case of conjoined twins.
Dr Patient Ngamije, the hospital’s director, where the baby was born said the abnormality could have been caused by a number of factors, adding that there were chances the baby would survive.
"Except for having two heads, the rest of the organs and limbs are normal. There are chances of survival with highly specialised care,” he said.
The baby’s mother, Faida Elizabelle said she was thankful to God that she had survived the delivery.
