The election for district mayors countrywide will be held tomorrow, instead of Saturday as earlier communicated by the National Electoral Commission (NEC).

Moses Bukasa, the NEC’S director of communications, told The New Times Thursday morning that there had been slight changes in the electoral calendar.

Bukasa said: "We made changes because February 27th (Saturday) will not only be a day for Umuganda, but it is also a Saturday when Adventists go to church.”

Initially, the NEC calendar for 2016 local government polls was such that all the other new district mayors would be elected on February 27.

Countrywide, local government elections kicked off on February 8 when every citizen above 18 years of age was expected to vote cell executive committees and councils.

They lined up behind their preferred candidates.

Another election by adult suffrage was held on Monday when citizens of voting age elected for the district council through the secret ballot.

It is the councilors elected that the mayors and their deputies will be elected.
