The home team’s goal was scored by striker Ndzinisa Wilson Sabelo in the 25th minute. Emmanuel Rubona's APR team will host the second leg in two weeks’ time in Kigali when they will be required to at least get two goals to proceed to the first qualification round.

The Swallows dominated the game especially in first half and had a lot of chances to kill the game had it not been for the heroics of goalkeeper Olivier Kwizera.

APR looked for the equalizer in second half but Michel Ndahinduka, Janvier Benedata and Jean Claude Iranzi missed several chances.

Last year, the army side defeated Mozambique’s Cercle de Joachim in the preliminary round 2-1 on aggregate before being eliminated in the first round following a 4-0 defeat to Egyptian giants Al Ahly.

The winner between Mbabane Swallows and APR will face the winner between Tanzania champions Young Africans and Cercle de Joachim of Mauritius on the weekend.
