The Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) have qualified for the semifinals of the Orange African Nations Championship after beating hosts Rwanda 2-1 at Amahoro National Stadium.

The Leopards started the first half the better side creating chance after chance and on the 10th minute, their efforts were rewarded when a long range shot by Doxa Gakanji found the back of the net. Jonathan Bolingi was also unlucky ten minutes later when his shot went off the woodwork.

In the 36 th minute, Congolese keeper Ley Matampi made a terrific save when he  blocked Innocent Habyarimana’s close range shot. That was the best chance created by Amavubi in the first half.

After halftime, Rwanda introduced Dominique Savio Nshuti for Habyarimana and things looked bright for the Amavubi.

The equalizer came in the 56th minute when Jean Claude Iranzi’s well placed pass found Ernest Sugira, who shot past goalkeeper Matampi.

Sugira would have doubled the score in the 71st minute but his lob over the Congolese goal keeper missed the target.

Since no team managed to find the winner in normal time, the game headed for extra time.

Congolese defender Padou Bompunga found the winner in the second half of extra time after beating Dany Usengimana to a cross.
