Cameroon 3-1 DR CongoEthiopia 1-2 Angola

Cameroon overcame DR Congo 3-1 in their final group fixture of the 2016 African Nations Championship on Monday at Huye Stadium to finish top of Group B with seven points and set-up a quarter-final clash with Ivory Coast.

The result meant hosts Rwanda, who topped Group A will face DR Congo in the last eight, a match that both sets of fans dreaded , especially at this stage—both quarter-final matches will be played on Saturday.

The Indomitable Lions broke the deadlock five minutes before half time break when Nlend Samuel launched a counter attack on the left wing, then passed to an unmarked Yazid Atouba, who made no mistake from 15 yards.

DR Congo began the second half with a little more focus and purpose which resulted in their equalizing goal in the 46th minute through AS Vitor Club forward Jean Marc Makusu.

However, their celebrations barely lasted when Nicolas Brice Moumi restored Cameroon’s lead, firing a strong shot just inside the box after yet another excellent counter attack.

Cameroon continued to display too much hunger for goals with back to back opportunities and better ball possession, and it was Nlend, who skipped past a hapless Congo goalie Matampi for his side’s third goal in the 62nd minute.

The Indomitable Lions, who drew 1-1 with Amavubi in a warm-up match over a fortnight ago, got the first chance of the game after just 10 minutes from Yazid Atouba Emane’s free kick, but goalie Ley Matambi punched the ball over the crossbar.

Cameroon looked more aggressive and ultimately got another brilliant chance at the half-hour mark minute through Nlend, but Matambi, who prays for DC Motema Pembe, denied him the chance.

Meanwhile, both Angola and Ethiopia are out of the tournament. Angola who had only pride to play for, beat Ethiopia 2-1 at the Amahoro national stadium to finish third in the group with three points while Ethiopia went home with just a point from the tournament.
