Editor,

RE: "Regional police officers train in repair of arms marking tools” (The New Times, January 20).

Thanks to Rwanda National Police for hosting this regional training. There is certainly a clear nexus between peace, security, and development.

Sustainable development cannot be achieved in the absence of peace and security, and these can only be guaranteed through the control of the proliferation of small arms and light weapons (SALW).

Great job by Rwanda National Police and RECSA for backing regional peace and security progress by combating the illicit transfer of small arms and light weapons in the region, including man portable air defence systems (MANPADS).

Now the region is safer and this has paved the way for cross-border trade, tourism and foreign investment, which is very instrumental in sustainable development.
