Steven Katwiremu clinched his first major title this season on Friday as he won the MTN-Ericsson Invitational by two shots at Kigali Golf Club.

Katwiremu, who also doubles as the club vice captain shot 74net including a birdie on hole 12 to beat off a stiff challenge from veteran golfer Andrew Nkwandi who returned 76net.

Marcel Byusa finished third after playing 11-over par.

Katwiremu made an up-and-down start in the 18-hole event with plenty of pars but a birdie at 12 saw him hit the front.

Upon his heroics, the jolly golfer walked away with a trophy and a mega Ericsson mobile phone courtesy of the telecommunications company which was celebrating ten years of service in Rwanda.

In group two (handicap 10-18); Bhaviman Mukhia edged David Kuwana by a shot after returning 77net while group three (handicap 19-28) was won by Arthur Barigye who amassed 32 stable ford points.

Charles Ntare shot 83 to take the gross category. In the tournament’s closing remarks, the club president Jack Kayonga who did not have a good day at the course extended his gratitude to MTN-Ericsson for a job well done.

"MTN are not just true partners of the club, they are also reliable partners. They have been with us during the good times but most importantly the bad times,” he said.
