Two Rwandan female police peacekeepers who were serving as Individual Police Officers (IPOs) in Haiti were killed by unidentified assailants on Tuesday.

Two Rwandan female police peacekeepers who were serving as Individual Police Officers (IPOs) in Haiti were killed by unidentified assailants on Tuesday.

The deceased, Assistant Inspector of Police (AIP) Lillian Mukansonera and Assistant Inspector of Police (AIP) Aimee Nyiramudakemwa, were shot and killed at their residence in Cap Haitien by unidentified assailants, according to a Police statement.

"The Rwanda National Police (RNP) regrets to announce the death of two police peacekeepers who have been serving under the United Nations Stabilisation Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) as Individual Police Officers (IPOs),” reads the statement released yesterday.

RNP, MINUSTAH and Haiti National Police have reportedly commenced joint investigations to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and offenders involved.

"The family and next of kin have been informed accordingly. The RNP condoles with the families of the deceased,” adds the statement by Police Spokesperson, ACP Celestin Twahirwa.
